The precipitator tanks at the Gove alumina refinery are nearing the end of their original design life. Alcan Engineering required a detailed in-service investigation to be undertaken to determine the actual structural behaviour of the tanks.

Texcel first worked with Alcan Engineering to gain a clear understanding of the expected behaviour of a typical tank, and then travelled to site and undertook in-service performance measurements. Finite element modelling was used to demonstrate the differences between expected and actual behaviour.

The investigation provided valuable information regarding the tanks in-service performance. This information was utilised by Alcan Engineering in their risk management strategies for this strategic resource.
